Decision date moved up for Gamecocks QB target Dylan Lonergan. Here’s how to watch
It’s decision time for South Carolina’s top Class of 2023 quarterback target.
Four-star recruit Dylan Lonergan will announce between Alabama, South Carolina and Stanford at 4 p.m. Monday, according to Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports. The event will stream live on CBS Sports HQ.
Once considered a South Carolina lean, Lonergan, the No. 9 quarterback in his class, is now picking up significant buzz that he’ll choose Alabama.
His three most recent 247Sports Crystal Balls predict he’ll choose the Crimson Tide; Alabama is also the heavy favorite in On3 Sports’ Recruiting Prediction Machine.
The Crimson Tide already have 2023 quarterback commit in four-star recruit Eli Holstein. Holstein, the No. 8 quarterback in the class, chose Alabama on May 24.
Lonergan officially visited Alabama (June 3-5), South Carolina (June 10-12) and Stanford (June 24-26) last month. He’d originally planned for a July 5 announcement before pushing it back to July 12 and ultimately landing on July 11.
Lonergan, a rising senior at Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, ranks as the No. 93 overall recruit in the 247Sports Composite.
As a junior, the 6-foot-2 Lonergan completed 63.1% of his passes for 3,392 yards and 32 touchdowns against three interceptions. He also racked up 645 yards and seven touchdowns as a runner.
Lonergan is also a talented pitcher who projects as a MLB Draft pick next summer. If he chooses Alabama, South Carolina would have no active offers out to uncommitted 2023 quarterbacks, per 247Sports’ offer list.
Having at least one quarterback in a class is standard practice for most college teams. Where the Gamecocks turn next if they don’t land Lonergan remains to be seen.
South Carolina’s QB room right now is as deep as it’s been in some time. Behind presumptive starter Spencer Rattler are Luke Doty (junior), Colten Gauthier (redshirt freshman) and two quarterbacks the Gamecocks signed in the 2022 class in four-star recruit Tanner Bailey and three-star recruit Braden Davis.
The Gamecocks picked up a commitment from four-star 2024 quarterback Dante Reno last weekend. Reno ranks as the No. 18 quarterback and No. 280 overall recruit in his class.
The team will also add three-star prospect Jalen Daniels from San Diego as a walk-on this summer. And there’s still a chance Reno reclassifies and joins the Gamecocks as part of the 2023 class.
