Death of missing Weymouth woman being investigated. Man recently moved in, neighbor says

WEYMOUTH – Few new details have emerged after officials said the death of a Weymouth woman is being investigated as an "apparent homicide."

The body of Christine Ruth Mello, 56, was found in her home at 34 Lake St. on Monday. Mello had been reported missing, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney's office.

Officials said they believe Mello may have been dead for "a number of days."

"The information we have at the time, including the apparent passage of time, includes no indication of any ongoing danger to the community," Weymouth Police Chief Richard Fuller said in a statement.

Neighbors say they tried to check in with Mello

Anthony Arredondo, who lives in the adjoining duplex unit, told WCVB that he last saw Mello in February.

"We sent out a text. We were knocking on her door probably 10 days ago," Arredondo said. "She apparently responded, but we didn't know if it was her because the texts were kind of wonky and they just didn't look right."

Neighbors of Mello's told NewsCenter 5 reporter John Atwater that a man had recently moved into her home.

Homicide is rare in Weymouth

There were no homicides in Weymouth in 2022, and one in 2021, according to data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

That killing occurred in January 2021, during a shooting at the Mastlight apartment complex in Union Point. The victim was identified as Eric C. Small, 30, of Cambridge. There have been no arrests in that case.

Violent crimes are trending up, with 149 reported cases in 2022, 130 cases in 2021 and 118 in 2020.
