Prospective buyers of Chevrolet’s upcoming Corvette Z06 have not had a great customer experience thus far. As dealer markups become an unsavory industry norm, desirable sports cars like the Z06 are being hit by some seriously large price hikes. Thankfully for the folks ordering their cars from Mac Haik Chevrolet in Houston, Texas, the internet was able to help get some of their cash back by mercilessly calling the dealer out on their business practices.

According to Twitter user Zerin Dube, Mac Haik Chevrolet had previously required customers to fork over an additional $90,000 in additional dealer adjustments if they wanted to have the chance to secure a Corvette Z06 for themselves. For those who are unfamiliar, this latest take on the Z06 nameplate is slated to hit dealerships carrying a MSRP of $106,395 from General Motors. That’s already nearly $40,000 more than the standard Stingray coupe, and not far from the $122,500 starting price of the previous ZR1 model. That markup figure from Mac Haik Chevrolet represents a price hike of around 85 percent over a base model Z06 sold at MSRP. While we might find that amount to be egregious, screenshots posted by Dube shows that dealer management clearly felt they were missing out on a profitable situation. According to the dealership’s general manager, a large portion of their early C8 Corvette customers had purchased their Stingrays at MSRP, only to immediately turn around and flip them for profit. The dealer decided to get ahead of this by attaching the markup themselves, earning all of that extra coin in the process.

The Corvette corner of the internet has had enough dealers doing this sort of thing, and they made sure that Mac Haik Chevrolet knew it. After sustaining some vitriol from online commentators, the dealership decided to flip the script on this whole situation. Customers who ordered a Z06 through the dealership at above MSRP will now have their money returned to them, and the dealer will now exclusively take orders for the Z06 at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Even if the dealer only ends up with a few allocations for the naturally-aspirated sports car, we’re glad those customers will get something much closer to a fair deal.

General Motors has taken a harder stance on the flipping situation now that the Z06 is closer to hitting dealer lots. As R&T reported last month, GM is currently planning to offer customers up to $5000 worth of incentives if they retain ownership of their Z06 for at least a year. Furthermore, the automaker is also planning to punish those who purchase their car from a flipper by making certain vehicle warranties non-transferable items. Flippers themselves will be barred from placing sold orders or reservations on specific high-demand models in the future. These practices are also slated to be rolled out for models like the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade-V. Whether or not these practices are able to slow down the secondhand craziness will have to be seen.
