Deadlines looming: SouthCoast Community Foundation scholarship applications due March 1

NEW BEDFORD — It's time to make you get in your applications for SouthCoast Community Foundation’s scholarships. With over 100 scholarships available through the organization, a total of over $700,000 will be awarded this year.

“Supporting students in their pursuit and completion of postsecondary education and training as a path to increased economic mobility is a priority of the Community Foundation,” said Melanie Edwards-Tavares, president and CEO of the SouthCoast Community Foundation.

Who should apply for these scholarships?

The SouthCoast Community Foundation serves communities in Bristol, Plymouth, Dukes, and Norfolk counties, including Greater New Bedford and Greater Fall River. The scholarship opportunities are available for high school students, college students, and adults.

  • High school seniors pursuing a 2- or 4-year degree or certificate program

  • College students pursuing a 2- or 4-year degree or certificate program

  • Adults returning to school to pursue a certificate or earn an undergraduate or advanced degree.

How do you apply for the scholarships?

The SouthCoast Community Foundation has made applying easy with an online application at southcoastcf.org/scholarships. The universal application allows you to complete just one application that matches you with all the eligible scholarships available to you. There are also additional scholarship applications on their online scholarship portal which require separate applications.

Applications for 2024 are due by March 1, 2024. Before starting the application process make sure to have the following to submit: personal essays; a letter of recommendation (strongly encouraged, but not required); and a most recent transcript clearly stating your name, school name, and GPA.

What are some of the scholarships available for New Bedford students this year?

Some of the scholarships being offered are: Jacobs Family Scholarship ($35,000) for five New Bedford seniors going into engineering, computer science, or math; Kruger Scholarship ($25,000) for New Bedford High School seniors going on to college; Albert F. Carr Scholarship ($20,000) for four New Bedford High School seniors going into engineering; Manuel S. Pina Scholarship ($10,000) for New Bedford, Wareham, and Old Rochester Regional students of Cape Verdean descent; Katharine Hassan Penton Scholarship ($8,000 ) for New Bedford High School seniors pursuing a business degree.

“My wife, Joan, and I have been delighted to be able to give back to my hometown of New Bedford over the years. Each year, we enjoy meeting the five students who are receiving the Jacobs Family Scholarship, and to connect with past scholars and hear about the great work they are now doing after college,” said Irwin Jacobs, a 1950 New Bedford High School graduate who went on to found Qualcomm, a multinational corporation. The Jacobs Family Scholarship Fund was established at the Community Foundation in 2000 and since then has provided over $2 million in scholarships for New Bedford students.
