Georgia voters have a lot of decisions to make this November.

There’s a U.S. Senate race that could determine the balance of power there, as well as a rematch of the contentious 2020 gubernatorial election. Then there’s the secretary of state race, the battle for the attorney general spot, insurance and agricultural commissioners and the state superintendent of schools.

In order to vote on those races, Georgians have to register to vote by Oct. 11. The secretary of state’s office has a how-to guide for voter registration on the sos.ga.gov website. Maconites can visit the Macon-Bibb Board of Elections’ office at 2525 Pio Nono Avenue, Suite 1200 to register in person.

“It’s become a fairly straightforward routine,” Macon-Bibb Interim Election Supervisor Thomas Gillon said. “If someone submits an application with anything missing, we get back in touch with the voter and get any missing information. We try to make it as painless as possible.”

Appropriate forms con be found on the Georgia Secretary of State’s website and the maconbibb.us/board-of-elections. There’s a digital portal to register, or PDFs to print and mail or hand in.

In order to be eligible to register to vote, Georgians must be:

  1. At least 17 ½ years old, and 18 by the date of the election, Nov. 8

  2. A citizen of the United States

  3. A legal resident of the United States

  4. Not serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude

  5. Not ruled “mentally incompetent” by a court of law

“The government should be of the people, by the people, for the people. And if the people don’t respect their choices, they shouldn’t complain. They have every right to vote. Elected officials answer to them. The people should be taking part in the process to pick the people who make the decision that run the county and state and country,” Gillon said.

There are other important dates coming up: the deadline for submitting the absentee ballot request is Oct. 28. Early voting begins Oct. 17.

In the event of any tied races, general and special election runoffs will be Dec. 6.
