Deadline for filing federal and state taxes extended to July for many RI residents. What to know.

PROVIDENCE − The IRS has extended the deadline for Rhode Island residents in Providence, Kent and Washington counties to file their taxes as a result of the federally declared disasters from storms in September, December and January.

What to know:

  • The IRS's new deadline to file federal taxes in Providence, Kent and Washington counties isJuly 15, 2024.

  • The federal deadline for tax filing in Bristol and Newport counties has not changed.

  • The due date for state tax filings, normally April 15, has been moved to July 15 for all Rhode Islanders, not just people in Providence, Kent and Washington counties.

In January, the IRS extended tax filing deadlines for people affected by the September storms.

The new federal deadline extension, announced April 4, affects everyone in Providence, Kent and Washington counties.

Besides tax returns, what other federal deadlines have been delayed?

The following federal tax deadlines for people in Washington, Kent and Providence counties have been pushed out to July 15:

  • Individual tax returns

  • Quarterly estimated tax payments normally due on Jan. 16, April 15 and June 17

  • Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns (normally due Jan. 31 and April 30)

  • Calendar-year partnership and S corporation returns normally due on March 15, 2024

  • Calendar-year corporation and fiduciary returns and payments normally due on April 15, 2024.

  • Calendar-year tax-exempt organization returns normally due on May 15, 2024.

The new deadlines also mean quarterly tax payments submitted by July 15 will not be subject to penalties.

Federal tax filing extensions as late as Oct. 15, but payment still due July 15

Anyone in the three affected counties can request a federal tax filing extension to Oct. 15, with one caveat: If payment is owed, it still needs to be paid by July 15.

State tax filing deadlines delayed for entire state

The state Department of Revenue has pushed out the tax filing deadline for state taxes to July 15 as well. This new tax deadline applies to the entire state, not just Providence, Kent and Washington counties.

The Department of Revenue warns in a notice about the tax deadlines not to wait until the July 15 deadline to file.
