Dead mice, mouse droppings. Kansas City ice cream shop had to temporarily close

The Kansas City Health Department temporarily suspended the license for Andy’s Frozen Custard in south Kansas City.

The ice cream shop, at 10641 State Line Road, was cited during a Nov. 17 follow-up inspection when effective pest control measures were not in place. The inspector noted mouse droppings throughout the food prep area and other areas.

It had no critical violations during a Nov. 18 follow-up inspection and was allowed to reopen.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the Springfield, Missouri-based company said: “The health and safety of our guests is always the absolute first priority at Andy’s Frozen Custard, and the violations were taken very seriously. Although we have always held ourselves to the highest health standards, we have put even more stringent new processes in place as a result of a full review that has resulted in the introduction of a very comprehensive remediation protocol. Several actions were taken along with changes in management at that location to address the situation as soon as we were made aware. As a result of these interventions, the store was cleared to be back in business less than 24 hours after its closure. We know that our customers trust the high quality of our frozen treats and we remain committed to maintaining a clean and safe environment for our employees and customers.”

The location had several inspections in the last few weeks when the infestation was noted.

During an Oct. 25 routine inspection, mouse droppings were observed throughout the establishment.

Two dead mice were in a trap below the dry storage rack and mouse droppings were found in several areas during a Nov. 3 follow-up inspection.

Mouse droppings also were observed during a Nov. 9 follow-up inspection.
