Why do we celebrate Mother's Day?

History.com states that the American incarnation of Mother's Day was created in 1908 by Anna Jarvis of West Viriginia, becoming an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis was involved in starting "Mother's Day Work Clubs," which educated local women how to care for their children. Later on in her life, Jarvis would denounce the commercialization of the holiday, making efforts to remove it from the calendar. Mother's Day traditionally includes gifting mothers with cards, flowers, and brunch or dinner.

Mother's Day is traced back to Ancient Greece

Mother's Day can be traced all the way back to ancient Greek and Roman festivals, according to History.com. However, the early Christian festival known as "Mothering Sunday" is the clearest modern precedent for the holiday. The celebration, once a major tradition in parts of Europe and the United Kingdom, was held on the fourth Sunday in Lent. It was also a time where the faithful would return to their "mother church," (the main church close to home) for a special service. Mothering Sunday is now a secular holiday, and in the 1930s and 1940s, it became the American Mother's Day.
