David Shaw Questions Nick Saban’s Comment On Bryce Young
It looks like Stanford head coach David Shaw was paying attention to Nick Saban’s recent comments about his quarterback Bryce Young’s NIL earning ability.
Last week, Saban said Young is approaching “ungodly” numbers in regards to NIL, even before he starts a game for the Crimson Tide.
“Our QB has already approached ungodly numbers, and he hasn’t even played yet,” Saban said. “If I told you what it is … it’s almost seven-figures.”
At Pac-12 Media Day today, Shaw had a pretty honest take on Saban’s remark, arguing that Young is not making “true market value” and that his earning power is boosted by playing for Alabama.
Shaw also echoed what many have said–that Saban shared that little tidbit publicly as a recruiting tactic.
Shaw strongly suggested that Nick Saban mentioned that as a recruiting tactic and that most coaches around college football simply "shrugged their shoulders" at the comment.
He questioned if the tactic is "what we want to be doing" in college football as it pertains to NIL.

Now, the part about Saban using Young’s NIL money as a recruiting tool, that part is accurate. However, Shaw seems to be exhibiting sour grapes with his first quote.
Of course, players at different programs are not going to earn the same amount on the open market. That’s what happens when you have a free and open market in the first place.
Will NIL rules benefit Alabama more than they do programs of a lesser profile? Most likely, but that’s not much different from how things were before.
