David Broud, Laura Hinson lead 2024 Wilmington Marathon race results

The annual Wilmington Marathon took place Saturday morning, a sight that saw thousands of runners flood streets across the city.

Out of a field of more than 850 runners, Charlotte's David Broud and Fort Bragg's Laura Hinson took home the marathon titles. Broud won the men's race in 2 hours, 41 minutes, 48 seconds, while Hinson beat out the women's field in 2 hours, 50 minutes, 42 seconds.

Broud, 21, attends N.C. State and runs for a club team but had never attempted a marathon before Saturday.

"I thought I could place in the top five, so first place was definitely a little unexpected," he said. "We had a big crowd all over the race course, which was a great feeling."

Paul Arredondo of Boston won the half marathon with a time of 1:05:47, beating out Mitchell Rome of Charleston, S.C. and Jonathan Martin of Matthews by more than two minutes. Amanda Martin of Goldsboro won the women's half marathon in 1:14:08.

Starting at Johnnie Mercer Pier in Wrightsville Beach, runners in the marathon, half marathon and relay races were on Eastwood Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, Castle Hayne Road and McRae Street into downtown Wilmington.

New to this year's race, runners saw a unique section of Wilmington, spending over a third of a mile on the rail bed of Wilmington's Northside corridor, which used to house Wilmington's passenger rail service, to 3rd Street.

Around 900 individuals completed the marathon, while over 1,600 did the half-marathon. A downtown 5K and 1-mile run was also held.

This was the 14th Wilmington Marathon, which was first held in 2010. The race was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
