Dave Roberts Shares Honest Admission Before Dodgers Offseason

Even though they lost the NLCS in six games to the Atlanta Braves, the Los Angeles Dodgers should still be contenders in 2022.

However, they are likely going to look a lot different. Several key contributors are set to hit free agency, including Chris Taylor, Corey Seager, Clayton Kershaw and Kenley Jansen.

Starting pitcher Max Scherzer is also going to be a free agent, but Scherzer was only acquired by the Dodgers at this year’s trade deadline. The other players headed to the open market have been with the club over the last few years.

The Dodgers have been to nine straight postseasons, including six in a row under manager Dave Roberts. Roberts has taken LA to the World Series three times, including winning it all in 2020.

However, after last night’s loss, Roberts admitted he wishes he could have gotten more out of the current group of players.

“The six years I’ve been here, it’s been a core group of guys that could be turned over this winter,” Roberts told reporters. “I’m not looking forward to it. I wish we could have won another one with this group.”

Of course, the Dodgers could opt to retain some of those soon-to-be free agents, but they will also let at least a couple of them walk. It is reality in the modern age of baseball; teams don’t stay together forever.

We expect the Dodgers will be right back in the mix as a potential World Series favorite next year. But Roberts’ words last night are a reminder of how hard it can be to win multiple championships in baseball, even when it seems like you have the right core to be able to do it.
