‘Darkest hour of my life’: Shakira opens up about split with soccer star Gerard Pique

Shakira is finally opening up.

And we are here for it.

In an interview with Elle for its October cover story, the Colombian pop star touched on a wide range of hot topics, from her hellacious tax problems and “painful” breakup to new music and her kids.

Fans were shocked when news broke that Shakira had split with longtime partner Gerard Pique, and, interestingly, so was she. The couple of 12 years separated in June amid allegations of infidelity and still have to coparent sons Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7, for many years to come.

Tough? Yeppers. Which is why she stayed mum on the matter.

““I’ve remained quiet and just tried to process it all,” the 45 year old told the magazine. “It’s hard to talk about it, especially because I’m still going through it, and because I’m in the public eye and because our separation is not like a regular separation.”

Good to know at least one thing is going well: Her career is back on the fast track, instead of on the back burner. The Colombiana moved to Spain, instead of a place like Miami, where she had a home and ideally wanted to go, so that Pique could continue playing for FC Barcelona.

“One of the two had to make that effort and that sacrifice...a sacrifice of love,” the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer said. “Thanks to that, my kids were able to have a present mom, and I have this amazing bond with them that is unbreakable and that sustains us.”

In a few months, Shak will be coming out with her first album since 2017’s “El Dorado.” Making the Spanish-English language record, complete with a few surprise collaborations, was “therapeutic.”

“I’m really, really thrilled about not only the body of work that I have right now to share with the people who are waiting for it, but also how gratifying the whole process has been for me,” she said, adding that the breakup fueled her creativity. “I feel that is an incredible outlet for me to make sense of things.”

According to the Euro gossip rags that have receipts in the form of photos, Pique has moved on with 23 year old student and Pique assistant, Clara Marti, though Shakira is way too classy to go there.

“I think that those details are somehow too private to share,” said the Super Bowl LIV halftime star. “At least at this very moment—everything is so raw and new. I can only say that I put everything I had into this relationship and my family.”

You think you have problems? Shakira is also dealing with nagging, seemingly neverending tax issues (“false accusations,” she says) as well as helping her father, who has been in failing health after a tumble over the summer.

“This is probably the darkest hour of my life,” the chart topper said. “But I think that women, we are resilient. You know, we have this resiliency that is just innate in all of us. And we are meant to nurture and to take care of those who depend on us.”

Right now her primary focus remains her two boys.

“I try to conceal the situation from them as much as I can. It’s really upsetting for two kids who are trying to process their parents’ separation. And sometimes I just feel like this is all a bad dream and that I’m going to wake up at some point,” she lamented. “But no, it’s real.”
