Dariana Breto of SLAM wins Lady Maverick Golf event. Plus football, volleyball and more golf

Dariana Breto of SLAM took medalist honors at the Lady Maverick Golf Invitational, hosted by Archbishop McCarthy at Grand Palms Golf & Country Club in Pembroke Pines.

Breto, who tied for first with Ariana Silva of Sagemont with a 68 (-3), won on a scorecard match. Rachel Gomez of Sagemont shot 74 for third place, followed by Gia Culler-Guerro of Mater Lakes Academy at 72.

In the team standings, Gulf Coast from Naples tied with Sagemont for first at 308. Gulf Coast won on a scorecard match, too. Doral Academy was third overall, just three strokes back, and the top Miami Dade finisher. Leading the Firebirds were senior captain Gabriella Gomez +3 (74) and freshman Isabella Russo +6 (77).

Football

The Doral Academy football team opened its season with a 48-21 victory over host South Broward in Hollywood.

Junior QB Jorge Rodriguez led the offense, going 10-of-13 passing for 225 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore WR Marcus Antelo caught 3 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns, Senior WR Mark Cohen and senior RB Mark Wilder Jr. also caught TD passes.

Wilder Jr. led the rushing attack with 17 carries for 184 yards and a TD. Senior RB Ryan Gonzalez ran for 64 yards on 7 carries and added a TD run in the 3rd quarter. The Firebirds ran for 355 yards.

By halftime, Doral Academy built a 27-7 lead.

Defensively, senior LB Rolando Diaz led the team in tackles, had a fumble recovery and intercepted a pass. Junior DB Leroy Lee Jr. forced two fumbles. Sophomore kicker Luca Guerra added field goals from 40 and 32 yards. The Firebirds (1-0) will travel to Rockledge this week.

Dr. Krop 23, Miami High 13: The Lightning came from behind to score the victory. Krop took the early 8-0 lead with a safety by junior DE Caleb Turner-Allen. That was followed by a 40-yard TD pass from QB William Bell Jr. to sophomore WR Ronald Towns, who finished with 5 receptions for 80 yards.

The Stingrays immediately responded by taking the ensuing kickoff back for a 65-yard TD return, cutting the deficit to one8-7 . Early in the third quarter, Miami High scored a running TD to take the lead 13-8.

Krop (1-0) bounced back as they were led on offense by senior RB Julius Pascal (25 carries for 175 yards and a TD and 2 catches for 50 yards).

Trailing 13-8 with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Lightning were pinned deep in their own territory at the 2-yard line. After five consecutive runs from Julius Pascal, the Lightning were across midfield. Then Bell Jr. connected with sophomore WR Xayvion Quarterman on a 50-yard fingertip catch and run for the go ahead score. The two-point conversion gave Krop a 16-13 advantage.

On the ensuing drive, the Lightning defense recorded a huge turnover with a forced fumble from senior safety O’Neal Webb, which was recovered by DB Kalel Pascal.

On 4th-and-inches with just over a minute left, Krop went for it and RB Julius Pascal was hit in the backfield but managed to bounce outside to score the insurance TD. Junior OL Aaron Mattison and senior OL Wesner Maingratte led the way.

Bell Jr. finished 9-of-15 passing for 135 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT. Senior Captain LB Elijah Brown led all tacklers with 12 total with 9 solo, 3 sacks 2 TFLs and an INT returned for 20 yards. Sophomore LB Qwincy Bonne-Annee had 4 TFLs, a sack and 8 total tackles. Senrio DE Guyteau Salvador Jr. had 2 sacks and 2 TFLs, and junior DT/FB Nathan Adras had 2 pass deflections with one tntercepted by the Lightning.

The Krop regular season home opener against Southridge (1-0) is 3:30 p.m. Sept. 2 at Ives Estates Park in Miami.

Archbishop Carroll 48, Florida Christian 0: The Bulldogs kicked off their season with a convincing shutout. Quarterback Ryan Castro led the offensive charge with three touchdowns. He ran for two and threw for another. The backfield of Alejandro Isaza, Sylus Villanueva and Manny Bynum helped the Bulldogs rush for 340 yards and six touchdowns. Jorge Matias and Dylan Miranda each had eight tackles and a sack to ignite the defense. AC (1-0).

South Plantation 27, Coral Glades 18: QB Jadyn Glasser 16-of-24 for 320 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT. He also ran 11 times for 41 yards and 2 TDs. Nehemie Marc 3 catches for 128 yds and TD.
