Danny Manning Reportedly Lands New CBB Job

After spending most of the 2021-22 college basketball season as the interim head coach at Maryland, Danny Manning was not retained by the Terps. But he’s staying in the college ranks after finding a new job.

According to ESPN college basketball insider Jeff Borzello, Manning is joining the staff at Louisville. The Cardinals recently hired Kenny Payne as their new head coach and have made several high-profile assistant hirings so far.

Manning went 10-12 as interim head coach of the Terps last season following the dismissal of Mark Turgeon. But Maryland opted to hire Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard as their full-time head coach.

It’s been less than two years since Manning was relieved of duties as head coach at Wake Forest. However, it appears he’s going to have to wait at least one more year before getting a new head coach job.

As a college basketball player, Danny Manning was a legend for the Kansas Jayhawks. Under head coach Larry Brown he won a national title in 1988 and became one of the best players in the school’s storied history.

Manning was equally formidable in the NBA, making two All-Star appearances during a 15-year career. He joined the Kansas coaching staff under Bill Self in 2003 and spent a decade in his former home before becoming head coach of Tulsa in 2012.

After two successful years at Tulsa, he took the Wake Forest job in 2014, but went just 78-111 in six years. His Demon Deacons never finished higher than 10th in the ACC and made the NCAA Tournament only once.

Perhaps a year in Louisville will be the springboard to a third head coaching job though.
