Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen feeling ‘fine’ days after heart stopped during soccer match

Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen said he is feeling “fine — under the circumstances,” just days after his heart stopped and he fell face-first into the field during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland.

The soccer star’s comments, shared to his Instagram page early Tuesday morning, marked his first since his near-death experience during the match in Parken Stadium on Saturday. The 29-year-old athlete also included an image of himself grinning and giving a thumbs up from his hospital bed in the post.

“Big thanks for your sweet and amazing greetings and messages from all around the world. It means a lot to me and my family,” he wrote, adding that he still had several additional tests scheduled.

“Now, I will cheer on the boys on the Denmark team in the next matches. Play for all of Denmark.”

Eriksen, widely regarded as Denmark’s best player, was resuscitated with a defibrillator and remained in stable condition in a Copenhagen hospital on Tuesday. It took nearly 10 minutes of emergency medical care and CPR to bring back the soccer player following his collapse, a moment that drew cheers from an otherwise tense and concerned crowd of sports fans.

The physician for Inter Milan, Eriksen’s current club, noted on Sunday that while the midfielder has yet to be inoculated against COVID-19, he has not contracted the fast-spreading illness nor has he shown any symptoms.

Eriksen’s collapse over the weekend caused the game to be delayed for about 90 minutes, at which point all players returned to the field. Finland went on to win 1-0 after Joel Pohjanpalo scored in the 60th minute and goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky later saved a penalty.
