Daniel Fuentes, Claire Smothers earn Press-Citizen's Athletes of the Week honors

Iowa City West soccer player Daniel Fuentes and Iowa City High goalkeeper Claire Smothers were voted by Iowa City Press-Citizen readers as the Athletes of the Week for May 13-19.

Fuentes earned boys Athlete of the Week with 41% of the vote. Clear Creek Amana track star Aren Schlemme placed second with 36% of the vote.

Fuentes, a junior, helped the Trojans defeat rival Iowa City High by a score of 4-1 on May 15. He set up four goals for his teammates and scored one himself to help the Trojans earn their 17th win of the season.

Smothers earned girls Athlete of the Week with 38% of the vote. Solon's Sophia Link took second place with 28% of the vote.

Smothers, a senior, helped Iowa City High defeat Iowa City West, 2-1, on May 13. She notched 11 saves to help lead the Little Hawks to their 12th win of the season.
