Alfonso Ribeiro is shining light on a difficult family situation, and what he shared has fans feeling emotional for him.

Ahead of his daughter Ava's fourth birthday, the Dancing With the Stars co-host revealed that she recently got injured after falling off her scooter. He explained during an appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark that the incident left her with road rash on her face and arms, leading to emergency surgery. What's more, Alfonso disclosed that she needed parts of her skin scalpelled to help with the "long process" of healing.

As he posted a picture of Ava post-accident on Instagram, he extended much gratitude to those who helped amid the urgent situation. "Not the kind of day you want the day before turning 4," he captioned the photo on May 12.

He continued: "Just want to give a heartfelt thank you to @kareskinmd for the emergency service and procedure to help lessen the likelihood of scaring. So proud of how brave my baby girl was during the surgery."

When fans learned of what happened, they immediately rallied around Alfonso in the comments. "So sorry for this. Praying her quick recovery and healing," one person wrote on Instagram. "Awe poor little baby! Prayers for a speedy recovery and for you all!" another replied. "Bless her little heart, she’s a tough little thing!" a different follower agreed.

A few days later, Alfonso gave an update on how Ava was doing. Posting a series of snaps from her birthday party, he thanked his wife Angela for being with him throughout the process.

"Happy Birthday to my sweet Ava Sue," he wrote on Instagram on May 15. "As some of you know Ava had a very difficult week. I’m so proud of how well she handled everything. She’s so brave strong and creative. I love everything about my little girl."

"On a side note I’m forever grateful to @mrsangelaribeiro1 for being so amazing during this time," Alfonso added. "Long nights with a little girl in pain and having to apply medication every few hours. My two [heroes]."

As far as recovery goes, patient care materials published by the University of Wisconsin Health system suggest road rashes heal within two weeks on average, alongside proper cleaning and caring for each wound. In some cases, surgery may be deemed necessary by medical providers, which may lengthen recovery timelines. Healthcare providers can be instrumental in helping people get better, in either case.

Sending all our love to the Ribeiro family!
