Dallas Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz reportedly unhappy with contract situation
Dallas Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz is not happy with his current contract situation and is letting his employer know about it.
Schultz informed the team he won't be attending the remainder of the voluntary organized team activities (OTAs), according to a report from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
That's a bit like telling your boss you have no designs on coming in on your day off, but the message here is clear: Schultz wants a new contract.
The Cowboys placed the franchise tag on Schultz earlier this offeason, and Schultz signed his $10.931 million, one-year franchise tender. His next order of business is to land a long-term contract.
Recent comps at the position include the Cleveland Browns issuing David Nkoku a four-year, $54.75 million deal ($28 million guaranteed) and the Arizona Cardinals signing Zach Ertz to a four-year, $31.65 million contract ($17.5 million guaranteed).
Other, lesser extensions at the position include the Seattle Seahawks' Will Dissly (three years, $24M; $15.98M guaranteed) and the Indianapolis Colts' Mo Alie-Cox (three years, $17.55M; $8.2M guaranteed).
The league's highest-paid tight end, George Kittle, is in the midst of a five-year, $75 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers.
Deadline for a long-term extension looming
Schultz and the Cowboys have until July 15 to come to an agreement on a multi-year contract extension. Otherwise, Schultz will play the 2022 season on the one-year tender and be eligible for free agency again in 2023.
Dallas' voluntary OTAs run through this week. However, the start of the Cowboys' mandatory minicamp is June 14. If Schultz skips minicamp, per CBA rules, he'd be eligible to be fined by the team for his absence.
Schultz ranked third among all NFL tight ends last season in receptions (78), sixth in receiving yards (808) and fifth in TD receptions (eight). For the Cowboys, he was second on the team in catches and yards last year and led the team in touchdowns.
Schultz, who turns 26 on July 11, is entering his fifth NFL season. The Cowboys traded wide receiver Amari Cooper this offeason and allowed Cedrick Wilson Jr. to walk in free agency.
