Daily Mail reports on Myrtle Beach having the ‘dirtiest’ hotel rooms in US. What we know

The UK’s second-largest newspaper published an article claiming that Myrtle Beach has America’s dirtiest hotel rooms.

The Daily Mail’s piece is based on findings from PlanetWare, which aggregates user reviews left through Tripadvisor. Myrtle Beach Chamber and CVB president Karen Riordan was not immediately available for comment.

A similar report by a different company using a similar methodology in April was debunked by Tripadvisor officials who rejected the analysis when contacted by the Sun News at the time.

“Tripadvisor has not approved the use of these reviews in such a report and as such, our data has been significantly misappropriated,” spokesman Casey Brogan said in an April 24 email to The Sun News. “As the world’s largest travel guidance platform, Tripadvisor views content moderation with the utmost importance, and as such, reviews by our community must be showcased accurately and are not subject to interpretation.”

Myrtle Beach has nearly 160,000 hotel rooms and drew 17.2 million visitors last year. The UK is the city’s second-largest international tourism market after Canada.
