Dade, Broward schools among those closed in Florida ahead of Tropical Storm Nicole

School districts and colleges across Florida’s east coast have begun to announce they are closing ahead of Tropical Storm Nicole’s expected landfall.

The National Hurricane Center expects Nicole will be at or near Category 1 hurricane level strength when it approaches Florida’s east coast late Wednesday. Here’s what to know about the status of schools across Florida.

South Florida schools

Broward County public schools extended its closure to Thursday, after being closed Wednesday due to Tropical Storm Nicole. All field trips, school-related activities and classes will be canceled.

However, all sports activities and events that were happening on Friday and through the weekend will still happen as planned.

Parts of Broward are under a tropical storm warning, while Miami-Dade’s tropical storm watch has been discontinued.

Miami-Dade public schools are closed Wednesday, the district announced in a tweet Tuesday evening. The district will reopen schools and facilities on Thursday, and all adult, after-care programs, athletics and school activities will resume.

Public schools in Palm Beach County will be closed Wednesday and Thursday due to the storm, the School District of Palm Beach County announced.

Charter schools in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach managed by Charter Schools USA, 20 schools spanning the two counties, will also be closed. Broward and Palm Beach schools will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, while Miami-Dade ones will be on Wednesday.

The Archdiocese of Miami told parents through email that it will not be closing its schools Wednesday, acknowledging that other school districts will do so.

“I am aware that Broward County has closed schools on this date, but our intent is to operate as usual,” the email read. “Public school districts have unique considerations (such as busing) that motivate their decisions.”

Monroe County public schools haven’t announced any closings yet. Charter Schools USA said it’s continuing to monitor the storm and decisions of school districts to determine if any additional school closures are needed.

No students were at public schools in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties Tuesday because of Election Day. Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe public schools will also be closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Other school shutdowns

Brevard County public schools will close on Wednesday and Thursday for Nicole. Schools were already closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Osceola County public schools will dismiss an hour early on Wednesday and close on Thursday for Nicole. Charter schools operated by Charter Schools USA will close at 1 p.m. Wednesday and close on Thursday. Schools were already closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Seminole County public schools will close from Wednesday through Friday for Nicole.

Lake County public schools will close on Thursday for Nicole. Schools will reopen on Friday.

Volusia County public schools will close on Wednesday and Thursday for Nicole. Schools were already closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Glades County public schools will close on Wednesday and Thursday for Nicole. Schools will reopen on Friday.

Indian River County public schools will close on Wednesday and Thursday for Nicole. Schools were already closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Martin County public schools will close on Wednesday and Thursday for Nicole. Schools were already closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Marion County public schools will close on Thursday and after-school activities will be canceled starting Wednesday afternoon. The district plans to reopen on Friday, pending weather and safety inspections.

Okeechobee County public schools will close on Wednesday and Thursday for Nicole. The district is monitoring the storm before deciding on closing Friday.

Pasco County public schools will close on Thursday for Nicole. Schools will reopen on Friday. Charter schools operated by Charter Schools USA will also close on Thursday. Charter Schools USA said reopening will be determined on a day-to-day basis depending on impacts and weather conditions.

St. Lucie County public schools and charter schools operated by Charter Schools USA will close Wednesday and Thursday for Nicole. Schools were already closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Hillsborough County public schools and charter schools operated by Charter Schools USA will close Thursday and will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Alachua County public schools will close Thursday for Nicole. Schools were already closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Clay County public schools will close Thursday and Friday for Nicole.

DeSoto County public schools will operate under a half-day schedule on Wednesday and close Thursday for Nicole.

Duval County public schools will close Thursday for Nicole.

Flagler County public schools will dismiss early on Wednesday and close Thursday for Nicole.

Hardee County public schools will close Wednesday and Thursday for Nicole.

Hendry County public schools will close Wednesday and Thursday for Nicole.

Hernando County public schools will close Thursday for Nicole.

Highlands County public schools will close Wednesday and Thursday for Nicole.

Lafayette County public schools will close Thursday for Nicole and will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Marion County public schools will close Thursday for Nicole.

Nassau County public schools will close Thursday for Nicole and will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

Orange County public schools will dismiss early on Wednesday and close Thursday and Friday for Nicole.

Polk County public schools will close Thursday for Nicole.

Putnam County public schools will close Thursday for Nicole and will remain closed Friday for Veterans Day.

St. Johns County public schools will dismiss early on Wednesday and close Thursday for Nicole.

Sumter County public schools will close Thursday for Nicole.

Union County public schools will close Thursday and Friday for Nicole.

Colleges and Universities

Some Florida colleges have announced closures or operation changes ahead of Nicole.

Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton is suspending in-person and online classes Wednesday and Thursday. The University of Miami in Coral Gables is shifting Wednesday classes online, has canceled on campus events, and is closing some buildings, like the library, ahead of the storm. Other colleges are continuing to monitor the storm.
