Cyclists stage ride to call for more bike lanes
A mass cycle ride has taken place in Brighton and Hove, calling for the East Sussex city to be made more bike-friendly.
Aimed at also being more child-friendly, the event was called Kidical Mass.
It was the second such ride to be held in Brighton, following one in September 2023.
The Labour-run council said it was already working on more cycle lanes and facilities for cyclists.
The campaigners want more connected cycle routes, especially aimed at children and families.
Organiser Iliana Koutsou said: “Kidical Mass in September had three times as many people as expected.
"It showed how much people want safe routes for riding.
"It’s great the council have now agreed to build the cycle lane from Brighton pier to Valley Gardens but we now need our council to increase the pace and scale of rolling out more cycle lanes."
Trevor Muten, chair of the transport and sustainability committee, said: “We offer cycle training and maintenance courses so people can be confident in using their bikes on the roads and we’ve been improving facilities for cyclists with more cycle hangars and bike stands for people to park their bikes securely.
“We’re investing in our cycle lanes too and work will shortly begin on a range of cycle and pedestrian improvements to the A23."
He said the authority was also "working hard" on a plan for a higher standard bi-directional cycle lane along Hove seafront "that’s better for everyone who travels along that route".
