Cultural Compendium: Dozens and dozens of events this fall in the art world in Beaufort Co.

THE TOGGLE

We’re midway through the phenomenal events of “Crescendo,” and are approaching the holiday season and its spectacular offerings.

In an effort to gather and spread the excitement of our shared and inventively appropriated information, we’ve toggling together this special version of our compendium to include the remarkable performing, musical and visual arts events coming up between now and the end of the year.

So here we go ...

PERFORMING ARTS

ARTS CENTER OF COASTAL CAROLINA

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

This deviously delicious sci-fi rock musical follows hapless floral assistant, Seymour, who spends his days tending to sad little flowers as well as his wilting hope of a better life beyond skid row. Suddenly, after an unexpected “total eclipse of the sun,” Seymour discovers a new breed of plant — a cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado!

Seymour is catapulted to fame as the caretaker of the succulent sensation, and the whole city is buzzing! But this quickly growing bloom isn’t as innocent as he once thought.

The engaging, campy, captivating script is delightfully diverting and the rock/doo-wop score and performances are spot-on and the energetic cast presents a vibrant evening of theater in which the action never stops.

“I love this piece … the musical, the film, the quirky characters … what a pleasure to see this piece come to life. How I appreciate everyone involved and their contributions to their parts in the performance of Little Shop of Horrors at the Art Center!” commented director Whitaker Gannon.

LEAN ENSEMBLE

THE TAMING

In this raucous, “power-play,” contestant Katherine has political aspirations to match her beauty pageant ambitions. All she needs to revolutionize the American government is the help of one ultra-conservative senator’s aide on the cusp of a career breakthrough, and one bleeding-heart liberal blogger who will do anything for her cause.

The Taming is a comedy that takes place on both sides of the aisle in an era of hyper-partisan politics. But before the characters can design a better way forward, they must first reckon with our nation’s past!

Director: Megan McNerney Azar; Actors: Dayanari Umana, Kerri Seymour, Peggy Trecker White; Set Designer: Jenni Baldwin; Stage Manager: Breanne Blackwell; Lighting Designer: Haley Brown; Costume Designer: Karson Green.
