Will There Be a 'Crown' Season 7?

Netflix's The Crown

The sixth season of The Crown will officially bring the award-winning drama to an end. Since it premiered in 2016, the critically acclaimed Netflix series has spanned decades of Queen Elizabeth II's reign—but the final season won't cover recent royal events. Creator Peter Morgan has previously revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, "I’m much more comfortable writing about things that happened at least 20 years ago."

"I sort of have in my head a 20-year rule. That is enough time and enough distance to really understand something, to understand its role, to understand its position, to understand its relevance," he continued. "Often things that appear absolutely wildly important today are instantly forgotten, and other things have a habit of sticking around and proving to be historically very relevant and long-lasting."

Though Queen Elizabeth's story will end with Season 6, continue reading to find out what Morgan has said about his idea for a prequel.

Will there be a Season 7 of The Crown?

No. Season 6 is the final season of The Crown.

Why is The Crown ending after Season 6?

Six seasons was the original plan for The Crown, but at one point in early 2020 Morgan announced that the series would end after Season 5. Lucky for viewers, Morgan reversed course months later and revealed that the fictional dramatization would be getting a sixth season after all.

"As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons," he said in a statement at the time. "To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present day—it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail."

Will The Crown ever cover Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship?

Don't expect to see Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship play out in The Crown. "The Meghan and Harry story is nowhere near over yet,” Morgan told Town & Country in 2020. “And I’m happy that I’m never going to write it.”

The sixth season of the royal drama will, however, feature "the beginnings" of Prince William and Catherine "Kate" Middleton's romance. The now-Prince and Princess of Wales met as students in university more than a decade before Harry and Meghan started dating in 2016.

Will The Crown cover Queen Elizabeth II's death?

No. Although there was discussion about ending the show with Queen Elizabeth's death, which occurred in 2022, Variety reported that Morgan felt the year 2005 was "the right place to stop" the final season.

"It was the cutoff to keep it historical, not journalistic," The Crown's creator explained, adding, "I think by stopping almost 20 years before the present day, it’s dignified."
