Cris Carter Asks Julian Edelman If He Belongs In Hall Of Fame

Does Julian Edelman belong in the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Cris Carter, a Hall of Famer himself, asked Edelman this question during a recent podcast episode, but the former Patriots standout refused to offer a worthwhile answer.

Edelman’s stats won’t prove to be a significant factor in his potential Hall of Fame status. In 11 years in the NFL, he caught 620 passes for 6,822 yards and 36 touchdowns. Those numbers come nowhere close to the numbers other Hall of Fame wide receivers produced.

So why is Edelman even in the conversation? Well, he’s a Patriots legend and was one of Tom Brady’s favorite targets during New England’s glory days. Most notably, he has a strong postseason resume.

The former Patriots star isn’t willing to say whether or not he belongs in the Hall of Fame, though. He’s going to leave that debate for Hall of Famers, like Carter, to answer.

“That’s not for me to say. That’s for guys like you that have a gold jacket to say,” Edelman told Carter. “I respect that organization or fraternity, whatever you call it, and you know I was never brought up like that to talk about individual stats or going out and try to be the MVP or this, I was always brought up to do what’s right for the team. Let’s go out and try to play games, big games and playing the last game and all those types of things. So I’m going to leave you with what I left everyone else. You know, it’s not up to me. I enjoyed playing in five Super Bowls and nine AFC championships. And you know that’s what I grew up wanting to do. And winning three Super Bowls so and playing your best games in the biggest games. That’s what I wanted to do. Looking back, I performed pretty decent in it and now it’s over. Now I go and just let the dice roll, whatever.”

Take a look.

It doesn’t sound like Julian Edelman cares all to much about the Hall of Fame. His team success on the field far outweighs a gold jacket, from the sound of it.

Edelman’s legacy will never include gaudy individual numbers. But he was always a team-first player and a fan-favorite because of it. And there’s no denying how well he played in New England’s Super Bowl appearances when he was on the team.
