Crash kills 74-year-old and great-grandchildren on road trip from SC, Arizona cops say

A 74-year-old and two of his great-grandchildren were killed in a crash on their road trip from South Carolina, officials in Arizona said.

Four other relatives were injured when the family’s car crossed into a median and flipped along Interstate 10, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Troopers reported the crash at about 4 a.m. on Nov. 23. The Arizona Department of Transportation said the incident happened near Casa Grande, roughly 40 miles southeast of Phoenix.

Officials said 74-year-old John Henry White was driving his family of seven to Phoenix when he overcorrected, leading to a rollover.

White and two other family members — his 3-year-old and 9-month-old great-grandchildren — died at the crash site.

The crash sent four other relatives to a hospital with serious injuries. They were identified as the 33-year-old mother of the deceased children as well as her other kids, ages 13 to 9 months. The two babies were twins.

Officials told the Arizona Republic and KSAZ that the family was on a road trip from North Charleston, South Carolina, about 2,100 miles away.

“We have not ruled out fatigue as a factor in this investigation which is ongoing,” troopers told McClatchy News on Nov. 30 in an email.

The crash closed part of I-10 for about six hours before lanes reopened, officials said.
