A crane accident shut down a part of Interstate 95 in Fort Lauderdale, fire-rescue says
A construction accident involving a crane and a travel lift south of Sunrise Boulevard closed southbound Interstate 95 since around 10:50 a.m Monday.
With injuries to two men working at the site, the equipment involved and the ensuing investigation, that side of the highway remained closed through Monday night, but the highway lanes reopened in time for Tuesday morning rush hour.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Chief Steve Gollan said there was a malfunction with the crane being used to put pilings in for a new bridge. That led a piling to fall on the travel lift, causing it and the two men on it to crash to the ground, he said.
Both men were taken to Broward Health as trauma alert patients in serious condition.
