Crabs Could Be Coming to Minecraft

Minecraft mob vote crab

Minecraft is home to a host of wonderful creatures — from horses and foxes to weird little pig guys that live in hell, there’s surely a Minecraft mob for everyone. You know what’s missing though? Crabs. And if we’re lucky, that might be changing soon.

Every year, as part of Minecraft developer Mojang’s annual Minecraft celebration, MineCon, the developer reveals a bunch of different concepts for new mobs to be added to the game. These votes in the past have added creatures like the llama, the panda, and the adorable sniffer, and people get pretty animated about which creatures should be included.

Once all of the mobs are revealed, Minecraft players get to vote on them, and whichever one gets the most votes is added to the game at some point in the future. This year, Mojang has revealed the first mob to be voted on, and yup, it’s the crab.

Science tells us that the crab is nature’s perfect lifeform, through a process called carcinization that sees non-crab crustaceans evolving to become more like crabs in every passing generation. It’s not hard to see why — crabs are truly wonderful creatures, and I would be one if I could too.

Anyway, Mojang says that crabs, if they’re added to Minecraft, will spawn in the mangrove swamp biome, and will drop crab claws, which will let players place blocks from further away. That’s actually a pretty interesting bonus, and I’m kind of surprised something like this isn’t in the game already.

Two more mobs will be revealed in the next week or so, before voting opens up on October 13, 2023. It’s hard to imagine anything will be able to compete with the crab, but there’s always a chance. The winner will likely be revealed during Minecraft Live later that weekend, on October 15.
