Crab salad ‘not from an approved source.’ Warner Robins restaurant fails inspection

Several containers of prepped crab salad “not from an approved source” contributed to a Warner Robins restaurant failing its routine December health inspection.

The restaurant bounced back with a perfect score at its required follow-up inspection four days later.

Ocean Seafood Market, doing business as Ocean Crab House, at 1754 Watson Blvd. received a “U” for “unsatisfactory compliance” with a score of 67 on Dec. 2, according to what was reported Thursday in the Georgia Department of Public Health’s online portal.

The restaurant came back with an “A” for “food safety excellence” at its follow-up inspection Dec. 6 with a perfect score of 100.

The state lists the restaurant’s name as Ocean Seafood Market. The sign above the restaurant is Ocean Crab House.

State health inspectors assign grades based on how many points are deducted from 100, with scores of 69 and below considered failing.

Follow-up inspections are required when a restaurant fails its routine inspection and generally take place within 10 days.

Most other Houston County restaurants earned “A’s” on their routine inspections Dec. 1-31, including multiple with perfect scores of 100. Two earned “B’s” and two received “C’s.

Failing grade

At Ocean’s routine inspection Dec. 2, a health inspector “observed several containers of prepped crab salad inside the front reach in-cooler not from an approved source,” the inspection report reads.

“Food shall be obtained from sources that comply with law. Food prepared in a private home or received from a consumer may not be used or offered for human consumption in a food service establishment.”

The report did not elaborate. The health inspector also observed raw shrimp inside a prep top cooler on ice at a temperature of 65 degrees.

“Except during preparation, cooking, or cooling, or when time is used as the public health control, time/temperature control for safety food shall be maintained at 41°F or below,” the report reads.

The health inspector found that the person in charge failed to ensure that employees were properly holding time/temperature control for safety, according to the report.

The person in charge also did not perform their duties as it relates to ensuring employees are properly washing their hands, according to the report.

The health inspector noted that a person handling food washed his hands for a short period of time and then turned off the faucet knob with his clean hands.

“To avoid recontaminating their hands or surrogate prosthetic devices, food employees may use disposable paper towels or similar clean barriers when touching surfaces such as manually operated faucet handles on a hand-washing sink,” the report reads.

At prior routine inspections, the restaurant earned four “A’s” and one “C” — including a 96 on Feb. 10, 2021, a perfect score of 100 on June 15, 2021, a 93 on Oct. 27, 2021 and a 94 on Feb. 22 of last year. At another routine inspection last year on July 12, the restaurant scored a 74 but received a 97 on its required follow-up inspection eight days later.

A “U” for ``unsatisfactory compliance” is given when a restaurant scores a 69 or less.
