Not only did the Dallas Cowboys drop their second preseason game to the Arizona Cardinals on Friday night, but they also lost one of their defensive lineman for the next few weeks.

Neville Gallimore, a second-year defensive tackle out of Oklahoma, suffered a dislocated elbow in the Cowboys’ loss this weekend, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. An MRI determined that he sustained minimal structural damage, which is the best-case scenario for the injury.

Still, Gallimore will miss approximately 4-6 weeks, which means Mike McCarthy will need to look at other options to sure up his depth for the start of the regular season. The Cowboys head coach knew that the injury was serious on Friday night, so he’s likely already thinking about how to replace his 24-year-old defensive lineman.

Given that the injury could’ve been more severe, Gallimore is somewhat fortunate and should be able to return early on in the Cowboys campaign.

Last season, Gallimore got a major opportunity after the team’s top defensive tackles went down with injuries early in the year. He plugged in as a rookie and played in 14 games with nine starts, ending the year with 28 total tackles, four tackles for loss, four quarterback hits and 0.5 sacks.

On the Cowboys’ first unofficial depth chart, Gallimore was listed as the top defensive tackle so Dallas will be eager to get him back on the field as soon as possible. The team needs reliable production from its defensive line this year if it hopes to compete for an NFC East title.

Fans will get more answers on Gallimore’s replacement when the Cowboys take on the Houston Texans next Saturday at home.
