Couple who assaulted teen over mask request at Sesame Place both sentenced to prison time

The man and woman who sucker punched a 17-year-old worker at Sesame Place in a mask debate were sentenced Monday to prison terms.

Troy McCoy, 41, got 5 to 10 years behind bars, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. His fiancée, 32-year-old Shakerra Bonds, got 4 to 24 months.

McCoy and Bonds were convicted in July of assaulting Dillon Mays during one of the teen’s first weeks on the job at the kiddo theme park in Langhorne, Pa., about 20 miles northeast of Philadelphia.

The couple were visiting the park with their three children in August 2020. At the time, masks were mandated in the park to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Mays, now 19, asked McCoy to wear his mask over his nose and mouth, but McCoy ignored him. Later, Mays was operating a ride while another worker was on a break. McCoy asked to get off the ride and yelled at Mays. Bonds asked him to step away and calm down.

But then she was also asked to get off the ride and became angry at Mays, hitting him in the face. McCoy then walked back over and punched the teen in the back of the head, leaving him with a broken jaw. He was eating with a syringe for two weeks.

McCoy and Bonds left the park without speaking to security and then drove home to the Bronx. They were arrested in New York and extradited back to Pennsylvania.

McCoy was convicted of aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. Bonds was convicted of simple assault. She also got one year of probation.
