Countywide sales tax, city gravel pit to be discussed in Manitowoc meetings

MANITOWOC — Manitowoc Common Council's Committee of the Whole will meet Thursday under closed session to discuss a "gravel pit."

The vague agenda item is preceded by a notice of closed session in which the committee may meet in closed session to confer with legal counsel in matters that are or may become involved with litigation.

The city has owned a gravel pit on Hecker Road, formerly known as the Newton Gravel Pit, since the 1940s and has been involved in monitoring environmental contamination related to historic dumping of chlorinated solvents at the site.

Another notable meeting this week is the Manitowoc County Finance Committee, which will meet Monday and will discuss information regarding a potential countywide sales tax.

Implementing a 0.5% sales tax in the county was one of the solutions County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer presented the county board with after sharing that the Human Services Department is expected to have a $6 million deficit by the end of 2024.

Here's a look at the full list of local government meetings for the week of May 13-17.

Readers, tell us: How should Manitowoc County fix a projected $6M deficit? A property tax increase? A 0.5% sales tax?
