County kicks off road improvement project in SW ABQ

May 6—Bernalillo County announced on Monday the start of the Rio Bravo Gap Improvements Project, which aims to improve traffic by adding a lane each way on Rio Bravo between Second and Prince SW, increasing the number of lanes from four to six, a news release said.

The release said the project will also add multi-use trail connection, sidewalks, bike lanes, lighting and signal upgrades.

"I am happy to see these investments and improvements being made to such an important thoroughfare in my district," says District 2 Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada in a statement. "The previous upgrades made to Rio Bravo near I-25 made a big difference for commuters who live in the South Valley. These new projects will only add to that."

Work will begin later this summer on intersection improvements at Second and Rio Bravo SW, and upgrades will be made to the railroad crossings in the area, as well as lane additions.

The release added estimated construction cost is $17.2 million for the two projects, which are expected to wrap up in spring 2025.
