Washington state is seeing gas prices decrease as some counties finally escape the extreme $5 or above gallon costs.

The United States gas price average has gone down in the last month, now averaging $4.75 a gallon instead of $4.91 in June, according to AAA.

Washington’s gas prices have also decreased, with a state average of $5.42 a gallon, only a three-cent decrease since last month. In July 2021, gas averaged only $3.81 a gallon in Washington state, AAA data recorded.

As Washington’s gas prices is seeing a hopeful decrease in price, the cost of gas varied greatly by county. As San Juan County averages $5.93 a gallon, Asotin County only averages $4.93, a dollar difference.

Washington state also has the sixth-highest gas prices in the country, following California, Hawaii, Alaska, Nevada and Oregon whose gas prices average up to $6.18 a gallon, according to AAA.

Washington’s gas prices have fluctuated dramatically throughout 2022, starting its extreme increase in March. On March 2, 2022, Washington’s average gas price was $3.94 a gallon. Only 10 days later, the average price was $4.65 a gallon.

Since the price of gas skyrocketed in March, prices across the country and in Washington state had a hopeful decrease in April, but returned to more increases yet again.

Throughout May and most of June, Washington’s average gas price continued to climb, but in mid-June the price started to dip below $5.50.
