Council votes to lower jail tax

Mar. 20—GREENSBURG — The Decatur County Council voted March 19 to lower the special purpose jail tax to 0.60 from 0.65. A public hearing will be held at next month's meeting, at 9 a.m. April 16.

A vote of 5-1 was taken to postpone the much discussed food and beverage tax indefinitely.

The only council member against indefinitely tabling the tax was Melanie Nobbe.

Council member Kenny Hooten was for indefinite tabling, but said he thought the tax could, eventually, be used for fairgrounds maintenance and improvement. He further stated that he wants to see a complete study and a plan before anything is pursued.

Decatur County Redevelopment Commission President Don Schilling presented the 2023 annual report to the council. Most investments made by the commission last year went to the county highway garage.

The commission also funded two small projects, one for the sheriff department and one for Decatur County EMA.

The redevelopment commission currently has approximately $2.7 million left in their fund and anticipates an annual income of approximately $1 million.
