Could Owen join Subtropical Storm Nicole in the Atlantic? What the forecast shows

National Hurricane Center

While all eyes are on Subtropical Storm Nicole as it treks toward Florida, forecasters are also watching another Atlantic system that might turn into the season’s next tropical storm this week.

The disturbance, described as a well-defined area of low pressure, was about 650 miles east of Bermuda Monday afternoon and is not a threat to the United States, according to the National Hurricane Center’s advisory at 1 p.m. Monday.

While the system is surrounded by unfavorable conditions, forecasters say it will have a brief window to develop into a “short-lived tropical storm” Tuesday as it moves north and then northeast over the Atlantic’s open waters before merging with a cold front.

If the system does strengthen into a tropical storm, it’ll be named Owen and become the 15th named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. The hurricane center is giving the system a medium 60% chance of formation within the next two to five days.

The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season officially ends Nov. 30.
