Cougars top Eagles in flag football opener, 35-12

Mar. 28—CHAMPLAIN — After one half of play, it looked like fans were in for a low scoring contest.

The second half proved otherwise as NCCS scored 27 unanswered points to pull away from Beekmantown, 35-12, Wednesday night.

The game started with both teams opening with scoring on their first drives.

The Eagles got things going when quarterback Payton Parliament weaved through traffic to open the scoring on a 65 yard scamper.

Her counterpart NCCS' Bailee Lafountain responded methodically as she drove her team down the field, capped by a scramble for a touchdown. A two-point conversion gave the Cougars a lead they wouldn't relinquish until early in the second half.

"Bailee Lafountain had a stand out performance," NCCS head coach Kristen Patnode said. "Her awareness of the open field in front of her was outstanding."

When the second half began, the Eagles again opened the scoring. Working down the field, Parliament eventually found an open Grace McCasland who found the end zone to regain the lead.

NCCS countered on what began a storm of offense as the Cougars would regain the lead and then score on their next three drives to push the lead out of reach.

"Desiree Dubois, Kylee Surprenant and Laci Roberts had some key plays that led to TD's or crucial first downs," Patnode said. "Overall, the adjustments that the athletes made during the game are what won us the game."

Lafountain finished with 381 all-purpose yards, and was part of all five Cougar touchdowns.

Three TD's came on the ground and two were through the air to Dubois and Lexi Roberts.

Eight different players for NCCS recorded a catch as Beekmantown was unable to key on one particular player.
