Corpse of paraglider discovered in Nevada 4 weeks after going missing

The corpse of a paraglider has been discovered in the broad Nevada expanse nearly four weeks after he was reported missing.

New Zealand adventurist James “Kiwi” Oroc’s remains were found under under a tree Sept. 18, confirmed Eureka County officials.

A report concluded that Oroc died instantaneously from multiple blunt force trauma due to a high-elevation fall, reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

“It is with great relief and deep sorrow that we share that James has been found, departed peacefully at rest under a tree,” said search member Amanda McBride.

A passerby spotted the 53-year-old paraglider’s chute blowing in the wind last week, prompting an extensive search-and-rescue mission.

Oroc’s body was found a little more than a mile from where his wing was discovered, according to xcmag.com. His glider was not attached to its harness and his satellite tracker screen was broken.

Despite the area being canvassed at least twice from the skies, the corpse was impossible to see from above.

“I flew over the spot in a helicopter twice and it was so easy to not see something. It was not flat, easy countryside. The glider matched the colors of the terrain,” noted search participant Rob Whittal. “It was not through anything other than major bad luck we missed it. Every effort was put in to seeing it. Our eyes were peeled and I never saw it.”

Search pilots surmised that Oroc likely experienced some problem in the air, which caused a spiral dive and loss of consciousness before impact, noted xcmag.

A GoFundMe page to cover search costs had raised nearly $100,000 by late Tuesday.
