Coronation Street's Chris Gascoyne lands first major role since leaving soap

Coronation Street actor Chris Gascoyne has signed on to star in new Channel 5 drama The Feud.

It marks the soap star's first role since leaving the cobbles for an "extended break" last December, with Gascoyne having played Peter Barlow across several stints since 2000.

Ex-EastEnders and The Holiday actress Jill Halfpenny heads up the thriller as Emma Barnett with Rupert Penry-Jones of Spooks fame playing her husband John.

Gavin and Stacey's Larry Lamb, Derry Girls actor Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, The Vicar of Dibley's James Fleet and Downton Abbey actor Amy Nuttall also star.

Emma and John Barnett seem to live the idyllic life on Shelbury Drive with their daughter Beth (newcomer Megan Trower), cherishing great friendships with their neighbours Sonia and Alan and older couple Derek and Barbara.

But relations in the friendly residential street soon turn sour after Emma and John add a kitchen extension to their house.

"As objections to the plans are raised, unexpected skeletons and life-threatening secrets begin to rise to the surface," teases the synopsis.

"Laced with menace, The Feud reveals how Emma’s aspirational dream turns sharply into obsession, paranoia, and fear.

"One decision sets in motion events that have unforeseeable consequences for both her and the people living on her street."

Gascoyne has a supporting role as an "intimidating" builder named Lee. Nuttall and Fleabag actor Ray Fearon play neighbours Sonia and Alan, with Fleet and Only Fools and Horses actor Tessa Peake-Jones portraying old couple Derek and Barbara.

Lamb, a supporting cast member, portrays Emma's "wheeler-dealer" father Terry while Derry Girls' Jamie-Lee O’Donnell plays scorned police officer PC Gallagher.

Further cast include Alex Macqueen (The Inbetweeners), Judith Alexander (Coronation Street), Joel Beckett (EastEnders, Casualty), and newcomers Luke Hammond and Joel Kai Ali.

Filming on the six-part series has begun on location in Newcastle, with The Feud expected to air on Channel 5 in 2025.

The Feud will be released on Channel 5 in 2025.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
