A former Chicago police officer is sitting in Cook County Jail following a whirlwind week that included him being convicted of domestic battery, quitting the force and being newly charged with illegally entering his ex-girlfriend’s home and attacking her new boyfriend, according to prosecutors.

But before Korey Giles began fighting with his romantic rival, an off-duty Cook County sheriff’s deputy, prosecutors said he took nude photos of the man as he slept in the bed with his ex-girlfriend, also a Chicago police officer.

Authorities said Giles sent the photo to someone, though it was unclear exactly who.

Giles, 29, of Englewood, faces felony home invasion and nonconsensual dissemination of a private sexual image charges, according to court records. A Cook County judge approved a prosecution request to detain Giles during an Oct. 14 hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. In court, prosecutors served Giles with a protective order barring him from contacting the woman.

Giles resigned from the Chicago police effective Oct. 11, according to a department spokesperson. Authorities didn’t give a reason for the resignation, but domestic battery is one of a number of “decertifiable misdemeanors” that can led to an officer’s removal following conviction, according to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

The day before he resigned, Giles was found guilty of misdemeanor domestic battery, but acquitted of the more serious aggravated domestic battery related to an incident with the same woman last year.

While they share a child, prosecutors said Giles and the woman were no longer dating. In a prior domestic battery case, court records described their relationship as an “intimate, non-monogamous” relationship, according to court records.

Still, Giles had a history of entering the woman’s Ashburn home without permission and exhibiting jealousy, authorities said.

Last October, Giles allegedly entered the woman’s home with a key and becoming irate because she was talking to another man. He allegedly took the woman’s phone, struck her about the face and body and pulled her off her bed by her legs, prosecutors said. Their child, 2, was present during the incident, records show. Two witnesses, relatives of Giles, tried to restrain him as he choked the woman.

While that criminal case was still pending, prosecutors said on Sept. 25 that Giles again illegally entering the woman’s home and went into her bedroom where he took nude photos of the 38-year-old deputy in bed.

After snapping photos, the couple was awakened and a fight broke out between the men, ending with Giles striking the deputy and shoving him down stairs at the home, authorities said. The deputy suffered an injury to his left arm, according to Giles’ arrest report.

Giles’ resignation and new criminal case reflects a reversal of fortunes for the South Side cop who hailed from a family of officers and who two years ago, received a department commendation as member of a team of officers who thwarted a freight yard burglary in 2019.

Following his most recent arrest, prosecutors in the just-finished case filed a petition for bond revocation for violating terms of his release in that case.

Giles remains in Cook County Jail, but is scheduled to return to court next week.
