After cop killer's sentencing, we need to back pro-police candidates

The sentence handed down to the convicted murderer of IMPD police officer Breann Leath is very disappointing.

Police officers place their lives on the line for the public each day they work their shift. The legal system and the public need to support our police officers now more than ever, given the current attitudes in society against police officers.

The city of Southport partners with its police department and is very proud of the men and women that serve and protect Southport citizens. Support from the legal system by handing down appropriate sentencing to convicted criminals will send a signal to all police officers, saying we value your lives and the work that you are doing to protect and serve the public.

Please make your voices heard in the primary election and general election by supporting judges and political candidates that support the police.

Jim Cooney is the mayor of Southport, IN.
