Cookie Monster claims his cookies are getting smaller. What to know about shrinkflation

Cookie Monster made waves on X, formerly known as Twitter, Monday for tweeting about shrinkflation and how his cookies are getting smaller.

Here's what to know.

What is shrinkflation?

Shrinkflation is defined by Merriam-Webster as "the practice of reducing a product's amount or volume per unit while continuing to offer it at the same price."

This is why Cookie Monster is complaining about the size of cookies. Shrinkflation means you are buying (for example) cookies at the same price, but the cookies themselves are getting smaller.

Reactions to Cookie Monsters tweet

Several users took to X to express their feelings about shrinkflation and the fuzzy blue monster chiming in.

Commenters were upset by the blue monster's tweet and slammed the Muppet for getting "political."

Most notably against Cookie Monster's tweet was longtime Muppet puppeteer Frank Oz, who is most well-known for his performances of Yoda in Star Wars, Fozzy Bear and Miss Piggy during his time with the Jim Henson Company.

"I'm shocked to see a news article on Cookie Monster talking about "shrinkflation," Oz wrote on X. "Jim would NEVER have allowed this. The [Muppets] need to live in their own pure world. Not our world. What has happened to the integrity of the character and the integrity of Sesame Workshop?

The White House responded to Cookie Monster

Cookie Monster even got the attention of the White House with his tweet.

"C is for consumers getting ripped off," the White House's X account responded to Cookie Monster. "President Biden is calling on companies to put a stop to shrinkflation."

The day after Cookie Monster's tweet, Biden announced a strike force to combat illegal and unfair pricing.

"President Biden is committed to making sure corporations are held accountable when they try to rip off Americans, including when they break the law while keeping prices high," according to a White House news release.

The strike force, which the DOJ and FTC will co-chair, will "strengthen interagency efforts to root out and stop illegal corporate behavior that hikes prices on American families through anti-competitive, unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent business practices," the White House's release said.

Cookie Monster's short-term solution to inflation? Eat more cookies

Cookie Monster seemed to shrug off all the negative comments and shared his current solution to dealing with inflation.

"Guess me going to have to eat double da cookies!" he tweeted.
