Convicted sex offender now charged with stalking his ex

CHIPPEWA FALLS — A New Auburn man convicted of sexual assault in 2017 has now been charged with stalking his ex, calling her more than a dozen times a day on multiple occasions in recent months.

Roger C. Robey, 348, 410 W. Dell St., was charged in Chippewa County Court with bail jumping and stalking after previously being convicted of a violent crime, which are both felonies. In a separate matter from January, he also has been charged with theft of movable property, criminal trespassing, violating a restraining order, and bail jumping.

According to the criminal complaint, a woman who had taken a restraining order out on Robey told police that on March 16, Robey called her 18 times in a three-hour span. He often left angry or threatening messages. Robey called her 30 times on April 12 and 16 times on April 18.

An officer reached Robey on the phone, who admitted to making the calls. He reportedly refused to meet with the officer.

Judge James Isaacson released Robey on a signature bond and set a new court date for June 19. As terms of his bond, he cannot have any contact with the victim.

In Feb. 2019, was sentenced to serve four months in jail, stemming from an April 2017 sexual assault case. Robey pleaded guilty in November 2018 to lewd and lascivious behavior, theft and criminal damage to property in Chippewa County Court. Charges of third-degree sexual assault, disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property and three counts of bail jumping were all dismissed.

Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell told then-Judge Steve Cray that Robey was also accused of a sexual assault in 2014, which led to him serving a year in jail. Defense attorney Kirby Harless told Cray that Robey had a drinking problem but has stayed clean.

According to that criminal complaint, an officer was sent to a home on Wheaton Street in Chippewa Falls on April 21, 2017, after a report of a sexual assault. The officer spoke with a 33-year-old woman who said that Robey had sexually touched her.

In 2014, Robey was charged with second-degree sexual assault by force, but that charge was later dismissed. Robey was convicted of substantial battery and ordered to serve 60 days in jail, plus two years on probation. In that case, the victim said Robey pushed her down a flight of stairs, causing her to hit her head and lose consciousness. He also was accused of grabbing the woman in a sexual manner during the fight.
