Controversial comedian Dave Chappelle’s new tour is coming to Lexington’s Rupp Arena

Comedian Dave Chappelle announced a new tour on Tuesday that includes a stop in downtown Lexington.

“Dave Chappelle Live” kicks off at Madison Square Garden in New York in August and will be at Rupp Arena on Sept. 12.

Tickets, starting with local pre-sales, will be available to buy on July 26.

General on-sale ticketing begins on July 27 at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster.com, according to tour producer Live Nation.

Rupp Club Experience tickets for the show are on sale now for $250-$275 per person, including parking, food and access to private bar.

Chappelle is the 2019 recipient of the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, and his comedy has won five Emmy awards (three for Netflix specials, two for hosting “Saturday Night Live.”) He’s also won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album three years in a row.

But Chappelle also has been controversial, especially with the LGBTQ community. A 2021 Netflix special, “The Closer,” was criticized for jokes about transgender people. Chappelle also welcomed tech billionaire Elon Musk onstage during a show in San Francisco shortly after Musk fired many Twitter employees.

The Rupp Arena comedy show comes with restrictions: No cellphones, cameras or recording devices will be allowed; all phones and smart watches must be secured in locked Yondr pouches.
