Contenders in every division: South Shore high schools boys lacrosse rankings

The South Shore is filled with talented athletes.

But the lacrosse season might be where the South Shore shines brightest. The area had one representative in each of the four boys state finals in 2023. Norwell (Div. 3) and Cohasset (Div. 4) won state titles, while BC High (Div. 1) and Duxbury (Div. 2) were runners-up.

In the latest MIAA tournament power rankings, there are eight area teams ranked in the top 10 of the four divisions. In other words: Expect more of the same this spring.

WHERE WE LEFT OFF: Two state champions: South Shore high school boys lacrosse rankings

Record as of Thursday morning and last year's final ranking in parenthesis.

1. Duxbury (11-1, 5)

The Dragons scored the best win of the spring so far by taking down undefeated Hingham in overtime on Tuesday thanks to Colin Hulett's winner. That snapped a six-game losing streak against the Harbormen. Patriot League powers Duxbury, Hingham and Marshfield are currently atop the Div. 2 power rankings. It's way too early to talk about potential state-title matchups, but my-oh-my are the potential South Shore matchups in Div. 2 exhilarating.

2. Hingham (9-1, 3)

The Harbormen dropped their first game of the season on Tuesday, falling to archrival Duxbury. There's no time to dwell on that loss, as a road trip to Marshfield is next on Thursday. During April vacation, Hingham defended its title in the Coaches Cup tournament. The Harbormen had been knocking on the door of a Div. 1 title in recent years, but now Hingham is back in Div. 2. The Div. 2 bracket is shaping up to look like the Patriot League Keenan Division Invitational.

3. BC High (9-2, 1)

The Eagles' six-game winning streak was snapped with a 7-4 loss to St. John's Prep. The Prep has defeated BC High in each of the last three Div. 1 state finals, and that matchup might happen again this spring. The Eagles graduated some huge pieces, but it looks like they have found a way to reload on the fly.

4. Marshfield (9-2, 6)

The Rams were a young team with a bright future last spring. That future is here now. Coupled with a move down to Div. 2, Marshfield is a legit contender. The Rams opened eyes with a win over Duxbury in the season opener, which was Marshfield's first victory over the Dragons ever. The Rams have since dropped games against Scituate and Lincoln-Sudbury, but Thursday's match against Hingham is the biggest game left on Marshfield's schedule.

5. Scituate (9-2, 7)

The Sailors scored a huge victory by winning the Chowda Cup with a 12-11 triumph over Div. 2 contender Marshfield. On Tuesday, Scituate rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat Plymouth South, 8-7. The Sailors are about to embark on an incredibly difficult four-game stretch against Norwell, Duxbury, Reading and Marshfield. Scituate is currently No. 3 in Div. 3.

6 Norwell (7-4, 2)

The two-time defending Div. 3 state champs are now in Div. 4. The Clippers have had their ups and down this season, but they graduated a senior class that included some major Div. 1 talent. The South Shore League is better than it has ever been. Norwell's best win is a 10-5 victory over an upstart Abington team. A May 23 game against Cohasset is one of the biggest in the South Shore League this spring.

7 Cohasset (7-4, 4)

The road to a Div. 4 repeat will not be easy, but by tournament time, the Skippers will be battle-tested. Cohasset kicked off a month with huge South Shore League games by defeating Abington on Wednesday. A league title is in reach, but games against Sandwich and Norwell, who are both also Div. 4 contenders, loom large.

8. Abington (8-2, 8)

The Green Wave made their deepest tournament run ever last spring, reaching the Div. 4 Elite 8. Abington might be even better this spring. The Green Wave were No. 5 in the Div. 4 power rankings on Tuesday. A May 20 matchup with Sandwich will reveal what the ceiling is for this team.

9. Bridgewater-Raynham (7-3, bubble)

The Trojans are another former Div. 1 program now in Div. 2. B-R was No. 13 in the latest power rankings. The Trojans will head to Marshfield on Tuesday for a big game between two teams with high hopes in the Div. 2 bracket.

10 South Shore Tech (10-1, NR)

The Vikings dropped their first game of the season on Monday, falling to a good Old Colony team, 7-5. The Vikings won the first matchup, 9-8. South Shore Tech could play the role of sleeper come tournament time. The Vikings are currently No. 20 in Div. 4.

On the bubble: Plymouth South (5-5), Milton (6-3), Canton (7-3), Weymouth (7-6)
