The 5 Best Vacuum Brands of 2019, According to Consumers

Crazy as it sounds, shopping for a vacuum can require as many decisions as buying a car. In both cases, you must:

  • Set a budget for the purchase.

  • Decide what type is right for you.

  • Research the many brands and models to find the best product for you.

Organizations like J.D. Power make your research process easier, though. The market research firm’s 2019 Vacuum Satisfaction Study reveals which vacuum brands consumers like best. In fact, just five brands earned above-average scores.

More than 4,000 consumers were polled for the study. All of them had purchased a canister, stick or upright vacuum in the prior 12 months.

J.D. Power then rated vacuums based on six factors it considers key to “the overall customer experience.” They are:

  • Ease of use

  • Features

  • Performance

  • Price

  • Styling/appearance

  • Warranty

The styling/appearance factor is new in 2019. It was not among the factors that J.D. Power considered for its 2018 study.

Upright vacuums

The overall customer satisfaction rating for the upright vacuums included in the study averaged 843 on a 1,000-point scale. That’s the highest such rating of all three types of vacuums included in the study, and up from an average of 832 in 2018.

The brands that earned above-average scores for overall satisfaction with upright-style vacuums in the 2019 study are:

Bissell came in third among upright vacuum brands, with an overall satisfaction score of 843, the same as the average for this type of vacuum.

Hoover scored below average in this category.

Canister vacuums

Overall satisfaction for canister vacuums averaged 827 in J.D. Power’s latest study. That is up one point from their average in 2018.

The brands that earned above-average scores in this category are:

Kenmore came in fifth among canister vacuum brands, with an overall score of 827, the same as the average for this category.

Several brands of canister vacuums earned below-average scores: Eureka, Shark, Bissell and Dirt Devil.

Stick vacuums

Overall satisfaction for stick vacuums averaged 836 in the latest study, up from an average of 820 in 2018.

The brands that earned above-average scores in this category are:

Two brands of stick vacuums earned below-average scores: Bissell and Dirt Devil.
