Construction begins on W.E.B. DuBois's new building. Here's what you should know

Project: W.E.B. DuBois Academy.

Location: Between Thomas Jefferson Middle School and the George Unseld Early Learning Center.

Description: Jefferson County Public Schools broke ground in April on what will be its new W.E.B. DuBois building which will house middle and high schools, according to a release from the district.

This new building will teach boys from sixth to 12th grade, according to the release. W.E.B. DuBois Academy opened almost six years ago and the new building is expected to open in August 2026, The Courier Journal previously reported.

“Bringing all of DuBois’ young men and staff into one, state-of-the-art school building will not only provide efficiencies but, most importantly, improve the sense of belonging, pride in the school, and educational experience for the students," JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio said.

The school will have 65 classrooms, two gyms, separate locker rooms for middle and high school students and the middle school gym will also be a storm shelter. The grounds will also have a turf athletic field and a stadium.
