Take a ‘consignment crawl’ through North Myrtle Beach: Newbie’s guide to bargain hunting

Consignment and thrift stores have gained popularity as an alternative to retail in recent years, and North Myrtle Beach is no exception.

According to a global study by ThredUp, an online secondhand shop, the secondhand market is expected to reach $86 billion by 2026.

A map brochure, found in most consignment stores in North Myrtle Beach, titled “Carolina Consignments and More” recommends five stores to visit for bargain hunting.

Fabulous Find’s Designer Resale

Karla Miller, owner of Fabulous Finds, said that she believed people were going to consignment shops and thrift stores as a solution to a rise of inflation.

For those who want to start bargain hunting, Miller recommends keeping a watchful eye when you go out.

“You just have to go and keep a check. Every consignment store runs deals, so just go in there and look for them,” Miller said.

Fabulous Find’s Designer Resale is located in North Myrtle Beach, at 1034 Sea Mountain Hwy, and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

DeJa Vu Consignment Shop, located in North Myrtle Beach, has been in business for over 30 years now. Robin Carter, the owner, said her business has been booming in the past summer due to a greater online presence.

When it comes to the difference between some thrift stores and the consignment shops in North Myrtle Beach, she said the difference is in the variety of items.

While thrift stores tend to offer a variety of items with a wide range of prices, consignment shops are typically reserved for higher priced items that “people no longer have a use for and end up selling,” Carter said.

DeJa Vu Consignment Shop is located at 404-B Main Street, and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Upscale Resale in North Myrtle Beach

Phylis Swilpa, owner of Upscale Resale in North Myrtle Beach, said she has seen a lot more customers in later years.

Swilpa explained that she isn’t sure whether or not the recent surge of business in her shop is economy driven, but that since stores and restaurants started opening back up after closing due to the coronavirus pandemic, she has been busy.

“Last year was the best year we’ve ever had. And I’ve been here for 11 years,” Swilpa said.

Upscale Resale is located at 1008 Hwy 17 South and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Flamingo Bay Shoppe

Flamingo Bay Shoppe, which used to be located in Little River, SC, now operates at 720 Hwy 17 South.

This store sells a variety of items but has mostly furniture and home decoration. A social media post shows that Flamingo Bay is ready for the fall season.

Flamingo Bay Shoppe is open from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
