Congressman and veteran Adam Kinzinger blames Afghanistan’s collapse on Biden and Trump

As one of only two Republicans on the House Select Committee to investigate the Jan. 6 uprising at the U.S. Capitol, Illinois representative Adam Kinzinger has proven his bipartisan bona fides. The congressman and Afghanistan war veteran said Monday that the 45th and 46th presidents are both to blame for the United States’ shambolic withdrawal from the nation where he participated in aerial missions after joining the service in 2003.

“I blame both Trump for this moment coming, and Biden for this botched ending,” he tweeted Monday. “I’m not picking sides, because both sides have failed you. It’s the truth about Afghanistan.”

The Lieutenant colonel also did interviews with CNN and the Associated Press Monday where he shared those sentiments. Kinzinger continues to serve in the Air National Guard.

He revealed in February that several family members wrote him a letter complaining that he had disappointed them as well as numerous Fox News hosts and God for his condemnation of former President Donald Trump’s actions leading up to the violent attack on the U.S. Capital earlier this year. They accused him of joining “The Devil’s Army.”

Kinzinger, along with Liz Cheney, are the only GOP members on the House Select Committee to investigate that uprising.

GOP representative Dan Crenshaw of Texas lost an eye fighting in Afghanistan in 2012 as a Navy SEAL. He said Monday that Biden botched both the U.S. withdrawal from the war the U.S. has been fighting for nearly 20 years, as well as the explanation for why the commander-in-chief made the decision to take troops out of Afghanistan.

“One cannot overstate the extent to which Biden has screwed things up,” Crenshaw tweeted Sunday as things were unravelling. “And all he had to do to succeed was nothing.”

On Monday, Crenshaw tweeted in the moments leading up to Biden’s afternoon comments from Camp David that he didn’t think any words could “restore confidence” or justify what was happening in Afghanistan.

In his 18-minute speech, Biden said he was “deeply saddened” by how things were playing out, but he didn’t regret ending the war in Afghanistan. He also blamed former president Trump for his part in negotiating a U.S. withdrawal with the Taliban.

Donald Trump calls for President Biden to resign

“Well, this aged well,” Crenshaw later said of his re-posted tweet. “Biden took zero responsibility in his brief remarks before he returned to vacation. He will forever be known for this failure.”

Crenshaw drew the ire of GOP loyalists in Illinois last week when he told donors the 2020 election was not stolen from Trump.

“Don’t kid yourself into believing that’s why we lost,” Crenshaw told one conspiracy theorist seeking office in the Land of Lincoln. “It’s not.”

President Biden tweeted Monday that the purpose of the war in Afghanistan was to strike back at Al Qaeda for the attacks on 9/11 and make sure they could never again use Afghanistan to launch further aggression against the U.S.

“Our mission was never supposed to be nation-building,” Biden said.

Concerns remain that Afghanistan could again become a haven for terrorists.
