Concerned Golden Retriever 'Supervises' Newborn Baby Sibling's Bathtime Like a Pro

It can be so magical to fall in love with a dog, but the only thing better than that is watching your dog fall in love with your baby. After all, your dog is basically your first baby, and it's only right that they're involved in their new sibling's life as much as safely possible.

New mom Machayla knows exactly what I mean. She and her husband made sure their Golden Retriever, Maverick, was never left out when they welcomed a baby home, recently, and he's already becoming the best big brother. His newborn human sister is still too little to pet him or play with him, but the way he watches over her says it all.

On May 4, Machayla posted the sweetest video of Maverick keeping a very close eye on his baby sis during her bathtime. He seemed so concerned about her in the tub, but he watched as bath time went by without a single complication. Maybe next time he won't be so worried!

Aww--what a good boy, Maverick! He knows exactly where his baby sister is, and he never takes his eyes off of her. When she's older and beginning to toddle around, she's going to have the perfect bodyguard to keep her safe! But for now, the sweet Golden Retriever can do nothing but watch helplessly as she gets one of her very first baths.

As it turns out, other dog owners can relate! Commenter and mom @taycampthompson shared a similarly hilarious anecdote: "We call our dog 'HR' because the baby makes one tiny squeak, and here she comes to double-check the situation." LOL! That's a very clever way to look at it, and I'm sure the humor helps, too. When the newborn days get long and difficult, a moment of laughter can make your whole day!

How to Help Dog and Baby Get Along

Videos like this make it look easy to introduce a dog and baby--and it can be, sometimes--but it can also be a lot of work. It's a good idea to start preparing your dog before the baby is even born by playing the sounds of baby noises and letting your dog explore the nursery. By the time the baby comes home, they'll be used to the sights and sounds!

After your baby is born, it can help to bring a baby blanket, hat, or even a sock home from the hospital for your dog to sniff. Anything with your baby's scent on it will do!

But when it's time to bring your little one home, take things one step at a time. Don't keep your dog completely separated, but do keep introductions going slowly until the change isn't such a big deal anymore.
