Comedy giants to perform in Spartanburg, what you need to know to purchase tickets

Steve Martin and Martin Short are bringing their live show, “The Dukes of Funnytown!” to the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium on Sept. 21.

That's right, Spartanburg area audiences will get to see "a wild and crazy guy" touring with the man behind the Ed Grimley and Jiminy Glick characters.

Martin and Short have worked together many times on stage, TV, and the big screen and are currently starring in the popular Hulu series Only Murders in the Building with pop superstar Selena Gomez.

Martin's career highlights include 1979's "The Jerk," 1987's "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," which is popular every Thanksgiving, and 1991's "Father of the Bride," which is constantly playing on streaming channels.

Short's career includes memorable character work on the TV shows SCTV and Saturday Night Live, as well as on the big screen in the "Father of the Bride" movies and 1986's "The Three Amigos."

Steve Martin, Martin Short not new to Upstate

A previous Martin and Short live comedy tour, "An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life," was recorded at the Peace Center in Greenville and released on Netflix in 2018.

Martin and Short performed two shows at the Peace Center for the Performing Arts in Greenville in 2017, one taped for Netflix.

Martin also performed with the Steep Canyon Rangers at the Peace Center in 2010, and he played Greenville clubs three decades ago as a standup comic, according to a Greenville News article.

When did Martin and Short meet?

According to the show's press release, Martin and Short first met on the set of their 1986 film "The Three Amigos." The comedy duo started touring in 2015. Their first live show was "A Very Stupid Conversation."

Who's performing with Martin, Short?

Jeff Babko and The Steep Canyon Rangers will be special guests for the show.

Babko is a musical arranger and composer in the house band for "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and has toured as musical director and accompanist with Short since 2002, according to his official website.

According to their website's bio, The Steep Canyon Rangers, a North Carolina-based group, are three-time Grammy nominees that have released 14 studio albums and three albums with Martin. They have also been inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. In 2013, they won a Grammy award for "Nobody Knows You" for Best Bluegrass Album.

Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at Crowdpleaser.com or Ticketmaster.com. Ticket prices have not been made available.
